Ceremonies to transfer ownership of the historic structure took place in Traverse City on June 16.

A local ceremony has been set for July 31.

The lighthouse, which is still in operation was built in 1885. In 2004, the Harbor Beach Lighthouse, deemed excess by the Coast Guard, was offered at no cost to eligible entities. The City of Harbor Beach submitted an application for the lighthouse and was recommended as the new owner.

The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society, stewards of the light since the early 1980s, will continue to manage the lighthouse after the transfer to the city. And the U.S. Coast Guard will still use it as an operating lighthouse.
