Murray's Mattresses and Home Furnishings support Home-Delivered Meals for Seniors
     BAD AXE — Ken and Kim Murray have a love for their community, and, for the 9th year in a row, have conducted a special fundraiser to support our senior citizens in the Thumb who rely on Home Delivered Meals. The couple owns Murray's Home Furnishings in Bad Axe and recently donated a percentage of their sales during the month of July toward the Home Delivered Meal program.

Library to host Military Mailing day
     PIGEON — Thanks to the efforts of several local folks who want to make sure the military service men and women from the region are remembered at the holiday time, the Pigeon District Library will be hosting an event that is sure to put a smile on the faces of those serving their country.

Council, Mayor seats up for election in two communities
     BAD AXE — Voters in two communities will be going to the polls for the November 8 General Election, choosing whom they want to be represented by on city councils and as mayor. The City of Bad Axe and the City of Caseville are the only two communities with decisions to be made on elected officials.

Disposal of unwanted prescription drugs
     HURON COUNTY — On Saturday, Nov. 29, the Huron County Sheriff Office will once again be open to accept unwanted prescription drugs between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Huron County residents may drop off these unwanted items at the main entrance, located off of South Street.

Thumb Industries hopes to expand recycling operations
     HURON COUNTY — Thumb Industries already recycles paper and cardboard, and just into the second year of operations, they hope to include plastic and tin. So far, efforts have kept the equivalent of 450 garbage truckloads out of landfills, with more than 250 million pounds of paper and cardboard processed.

     BAD AXE — The Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers may have defeated the Bad Axe Hatchets during the Oct. 7 football game, but to the Huron County Homeless Coalition, the Hatchets are the true champions, winning the first-ever Spaghetti Showdown for Project Connect.

Operation Christmas Child
     For the past several years, Cross Lutheran Church, Pigeon, has participated in Operation Christmas Child, which was started by the Franklin Graham family. Last year, members of the congregation wrapped and sent 330 shoe boxes to needy children throughout the world. One shoebox was traced to a child in Kenya.

     UBLY — The Ubly FFA is once again doing their annul Ubly FFA Fruit and Nut Sale Fundraiser. The sale is happening from now until Monday, Nov. 28. Delivery of the fruit and nuts is during the weeks of December 5th or December 12th. Day of delivery is to be determined when orders are placed.

     Harbor Beach Community Hospital has been chosen as one of the Top 100 Hospitals for Patient Experience by WomenCertified. The Women’s Choice Award by WomenCertified is issued to businesses who meet a higher standard of customer experience among women. The Choice Award signifies the hospital has scored on average a good plus rating among women.

‘Real Steel’ out for U.S. general release
     THE THUMB - “Real Steel” - a movie, with scenes filmed here in the Thumb - opened on Friday, Oct. 7 for General Release in the United States, according to the Internet Movie Database. A movie crew, using a helicopter, filmed some scenes for the film in the Ubly area last year. The pilot snagged some power lines, but landed safely.

Senior Center rubber bridge results
     HURON COUNTY - Three tables played rubber bridge at the senior center on Oct. 14 at the Huron County Senior Center in Bad Axe. Winners were: first, Mary Fietsam; second, Mary Lou Maurer; third, Gloria Schelke; fourth, Arlene Regentin; tied for fifth, Carolyn Kennedy and Sue Ronca.
