Taylor-Jerome named new VIEW editor
Kelly Taylor-Jerome HURON COUNTY - Kelly Taylor- Jerome, of Bad Axe, has been chosen News & Sports Editor of the Huron County VIEW.
“We had an overwhelming response to our advertisement for the editor’s position,” VIEW Publisher Jane Vanderpoel commented. “There was an exceptional pool of experienced and talented candidates vying for the position. Kelly’s was one of the last resumes to find my desk. While Kelly’s resume of experience stood out among several other qualified candidates, it was the expression of commitment to Huron County and her desire to do the job she loves, where she loves to live that moved her to the top of the list. That dedication to community will be reflected in her work as the editor of our community newspaper,” Vanderpoel said, adding, “Kelly is fully vested in Huron County.”
Taylor-Jerome moved to Huron County in October of 2008 when she was named editor of the Huron Daily Tribune. Since then, she has developed a deep love and appreciation for Huron County and the people who live here.
“When I left the Daily Tribune, I was faced with a choice of either stepping away from journalism for a while or leaving the county,” Taylor-Jerome said. “Although I love journalism, I chose to stay in the community I love and hope for an opportunity to arise where I could reenter the field. I was fortunate to find a perfect position quite quickly.”
Taylor-Jerome, 34, has an extensive background in editing and news reporting. She formerly was the township reporter and weekend editor for the Midland Daily News. She also was the editor of the Huron Daily Tribune for nearly three years.
While sports reporting will be a new adventure for Taylor-Jerome, she does have quite a bit of experience as an athlete and has been a lifelong fan of sports at all levels of play.
“My dad was a high school and college football coach, so I grew up in a home that valued sports, and I still watch the NFL regularly,” Taylor-Jerome said. “Also, I was all-state in both cross country and track all four years in high school, so I know how much appearing in the local paper means to young athletes. I look forward to giving our athletes the recognition they deserve for their hard work and dedication.”
In addition to editing, Taylor-Jerome will be in the community reporting on what happens here in Huron County. She will attend local government meetings, sporting events, festivals, court cases and other events.
“In my previous experience as an editor, my ability to get out into the community was limited,” Taylor-Jerome said. “I originally was interested in journalism because I love people and their stories, and I’m ecstatic to be in a position where I can tell those stories.”
Taylor-Jerome, who has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Central Michigan University, has a daughter and a son, both of whom attend Bad Axe Public Schools. She volunteers as her son’s Cub Scout den leader.
