Photo by John Bonke BAD AXE - The Huron County Baby Pantry has been serving Huron County for the past 10 years, and now is located in the former George E. Greene Elementary School building. Starting on Thursday, Feb. 23 it will open at 309 North Outer Drive, west of the main downtown area.

The Huron County Baby Pantry assists Huron County residents with children under 5 by providing, for free, items like gently-used clothing and equipment, diapers, bottles, toys, formula, baby food and toddler snacks. Clothing is for infants and children through size 8. Some maternity clothing is available. The food items are through the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, which determines item selection and availability.

Huron County Baby Pantry Secretary Pam Kahler estimates that around 50-60 families are served each time the baby pantry is open, meeting the needs of possibly 200 children. Kahler says she is very appreciative of the generosity of the Bad Axe Public Schools for allowing the use of space in the building.

There is no income requirement, but persons must be a Huron County resident. The baby pantry is open on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m.

The pantry is funded through the Huron County Child Abuse & Neglect Council and the Greater Huron County United Way. Donations of clothing, equipment, money and time also are accepted.
