Ubly accepting kindergarten pre-registrations for fall

UBLY — Ubly Elementary School is accepting Kindergarten pre-registrations for the fall of 2015. Any child who will be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2015, is eligible to register. To pre-register your child, please stop in or call Ubly Elementary School at 989-658-8261, any time between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. - Monday through Friday.

Village of Pigeon setting up notification system

PIGEON — The Village of Pigeon is setting up a computerized system to send out messages to residents (Phone Tree) such as “Run Water” or if trash day is being changed due holidays or bad weather. The village is asking residents to complete and return by regular mail the self-addressed, stamped postcard, which was previously sent out. Residents may also contact the village by email at villageofpigeon@gmail.com or call 989-453-2733 with contact information and the desired form of notification, whether it be a phone call, email or a text message. If a resident would like a text message they will also have to supply the village with their cellular carrier.

Pigeon library adult winter reading program

PIGEON — Pigeon District Library’s Adult Winter Reading Program returns on Monday, Jan. 19 and will run to Saturday, Feb. 28. The staff says, “Don’t let the winter weather get you down - have some fun with our Adult Winter Reading Program!” There will be weekly prizes as well as an End-of-Program Party with refreshments, fellowship and “lots” of prizes. The staff explains, an entry slip will be given to patrons each time they check out books, audiobooks, books on CD, Playaways or magazines. To participate, patrons must be within the library’s service area.

Caregiver Connection Support Group, Jan. 15

PIGEON — The Scheurer Hospital Caregiver Connection Support Group will meet Thursday, Jan. 15 at noon in the Wilson Education Center at Scheurer Hospital. Clinical Psychologist Trevor Grice will discuss “Handling the New Year’s Stress.” Lunch will be served. RSVP to 989-453-5222. Reservations appreciated but not required.

“Dolphin Tale 2” — Jan. 15

UNIONVILLE — Columbia Township Library, 6456 Center St. (M-24), Unionville, will show a free movie on Thursday, Jan. 15, 1 p.m., “Dolphin Tale 2” (2014, PG, 107 mins., drama, family, Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble, Juliana Harkavy).

Story Hour to resume at Bad Axe library Jan. 15

BAD AXE — School age (K-3) Story Hour will resume at the Bad Axe Area District Library on Thursdays starting Jan. 15 from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students at the Bad Axe Elementary School may ride the bus from school to the library, provided signed permission slips, available at the library, are submitted to the school. Parents may pick their children up at the end of the session. Each story hour has activities planned around a unique theme. The sessions include stories, songs, rhymes, finger plays, crafts and educational activities.

Page Turners Book Club to meet Jan. 20

HARBOR BEACH — The Page Turners Book Club is reading “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,” by Jamie Ford. The club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. in the Woman’s Club Room. Youth knitting lesson, Jan. 22

The library reminds that knitters, crocheters and needlepointers gather weekly on Thursdays at 1 p.m. to share patterns and techniques. Needle workers of all experience levels are welcome.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

PIGEON — Scheurer Hospital will host “Ask the Expert: Seasonal Affective Disorder” on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. at Country Bay Village in Pigeon. Michigan Annual Picnic

Readathon to help Bad Axe library, Jan. 24

BAD AXE — The National Book Foundation is sponsoring a National Readathon Day on Saturday, Jan. 24 and the Bad Axe Area District Library wants everyone to participate! Readers can sign up now at the library and pledge to read from 30 minutes to four hours on Jan. 24 any time between noon and 4 p.m. at the library and enjoy complementary snacks, hot chocolate and coffee during that time. The Friends of the Bad Axe Area District Library will donate $2 per hour toward the Bad Axe Area District Library’s goal of 50 hours of reading.

Lego voting ends Jan. 24

HARBOR BEACH — The Harbor Beach Area District Library is hosting a Lego Display and Contest again this year, with voting through Jan. 24, and prizes awarded on Jan. 26.

American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Class

PIGEON — Scheurer Hospital will host an American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Class on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wilson Education Center. Youth ages 11-14 will learn safety and safe play, basic care, first aid, leadership and professionalism. Pre-registration and pre-payment required. Register online at www.scheurer.org.

“A Good Year” - Feb. 9

Used book sale Feb. 10

BAD AXE — The Friends of the Bad Axe Area District Library will conduct a Used Book Sale on Tuesday, Feb. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. at the former George E. Greene elementary school building. Items include used books, audio books, movies, music and video games. Donations of items may be made at that time as well.
