The Thumb Breadbasket serves many local families throughout the coop’s growing region.

Added to that will be $12,604 in matching funds from Land O’ Lakes.

Partnering with Invest An Acre/Feed America, the Cooperative Elevator Co. will donate $5,870.30, which is eligible for matching funds. The donation is 25 percent of the crop income generated from a 40-acre parcel of land owned by Cooperative Elevator Co.

The total donation to help support the efforts of Thumb Breadbasket for this coming year totals more than $41,000.

“We are humble and fortunate to be able to continue to work together in helping those in need in the Thumb and surrounding areas,” said Vice President of Finance and Interim CEO Mike Wehner. “The entire membership, Board of Directors and employee team are proud to be associated with agriculture and are grateful for the opportunity in serving the needs of many. Cooperative Elevator Co. takes great pride in doing its part in helping families in our area during times of need.”

Wehner added that the Cooperative Elevator Co. believes that agriculture is a major player in the role to reduce hunger, here at home, and especially throughout the global world.

The remaining 75 percent from the 40-acre parcel has been donated to Foods Resource Bank/Huron County Hunger Relief, which the Cooperative Elevator Co. helps support to share the message of agriculture and hope around the world.

“The partnerships that have developed over the years with many local food banks, both close to home and throughout the world, allows Cooperative Elevator Co. to share their growers’ generous support as well as their abundant harvest for these programs,” Wehner added.
