Harbor Beach robotics team in State Competition

HARBOR BEACH — Harbor Beach Middle School FTC Team 8787 is participating in this year’s FTC season, featuring the “RES-Q” challenge, which simulates rescuing stranded mountain climbers. Harbor Beach Middle School FTC Robotics Team competed on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Qualifier at Kettering University and finished 22nd out of 33 teams. Then, the team competed on Saturday Dec. 12 at the Qualifier in Freeland, where they finished in 4th out of 32 teams during the Qualification Rounds. They were in an alliance with two other teams and won their semi-final matches (2-0). However, they lost in the finals (0-2). They were a Finalist and qualified to compete at the State Competition in Battle Creek on Saturday, Dec. 19. The 2015-2016 game FIRST RES-Q is modeled after rescue situations faced by mountain explorers all over the globe. Played by two Alliances of two robots each, robots will score points by: “resetting” Rescue beacons; delivering Rescue Climbers to a shelter; parking on the mountain; and parking in the Rescue beacon repair zone or floor goal. Robots may also score points by retrieving debris from the playing field and placing them in mountain or floor goals and also by hanging from a pull-up bar during the last 30-seconds of a match. FTC stands for FIRST Tech Challenge, with FIRST an acronym for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST was founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, N.H., the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.
