BAD AXE — City police have interviewed the suspect in a felonious assault with a gun that reportedly took place early Friday morning outside a home located in the east side of Bad Axe.

Bad Axe Police Chief David W. Rothe said the suspect was identified Saturday. No arrests were made, as the suspect was cooperative and Rothe believes the incident will not be repeated.

“He is not a threat to the community. If we felt he was a threat, we would have lodged him to keep him off the streets,” he said.

The alleged assault continues to be under investigation, and charges could result, Rothe said.

According to the report, a Bad Axe man and Essexville woman, both 23, stated they were sitting in a vehicle parked at a private residence around 1:30 a.m. when they were approached by a man who claimed to be a police officer. The man then had them exit their vehicle, which he preceded to search.

“After that was done, he advised them that he was not a police officer but stated that he lived in the neighborhood and saw the car parked and running. He wanted to see what they were up to,” the report states.

The alleged victims stated an argument ensued and the man pulled out a gun. According to the victims, they were able to overpower the man and take the gun. After a short struggle, during which the suspect received injuries to his face, the man fled the scene on foot.

When Bad Axe Police interviewed the victims, they retrieved a handgun, which was not loaded. The gun will be sent to the crime lab for various testing, Rothe said.

After getting assistance from a local radio station and social media, police received several tips from citizens which led to the suspect being identified.
