International students to do ‘Tables for Tips’
HURON COUNTY — International students will be waiting “Tables for Tips” at Bad Axe Pizza Hut from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, March 20. The students, here through the International Student Exchange program, attend local schools and have become a member of a new family and new community. While the students are here, they must participate in community service hours as a way to give back.
The money the students earn goes to Human Development Commission’s Walk for Warmth, a statewide event sponsored by Community Action Agencies to raise funds for individuals and families in desperate need of assistance with heat and utility emergencies.
Many of these students have never experienced cold or snow and cannot imagine what it must be like to be really cold in their own home.
Many of the people HDC serves are struggling on fixed incomes or ineligible for other types of assistance. Walk for Warmth has assisted senior citizens, handicapped individuals and the working poor. Walk for Warmth is a voluntary effort by area citizens who gather pledges and walk a predetermined onemile route each February.
