Laker soccer hits a wall

Photo by Kelly Krager PIGEON — While the Elkton- Pigeon-Bay Port Laker girls soccer team has enjoyed some early success this season, they were unable to conquer the Kings Tuesday night.

Laker fell 4-0 against Midland Calvary Baptist.

The team had a big win of 7-0 Monday at Brown City. Kaitlin Brown scored two goals, and Halle Keim, Hannah Hammond, Michelle Deering, Kari Bushey and Sarah Hammond each made a successful shot. Keim and Madison Krohn each had two assists, and Hope Harder had one. Michelle Deering, Kaitlin Brown and Haley McArdle combined for five saves in goal.

Laker won its first game of the year at Mount Morris, boasting a final score of 2-0. Keim scored on a free kick and Krohn scored with an assist from Deering. Kern had two saves in goal.

Baseball

(At) Ubly 3, 0; Lakers 1, 4: Game 1: Ryan Sweeney picked up the win for Ubly with 12 strikeouts, one run and no walks. Sweeney also added a solo home run and an RBI single. Game 2: Anthony Sweeney started game two, with Casey Sweeney coming in for relief after three innings. Skyler Lesoski added a double. “Our pitching was much improved. Ryan’s performance was solid and Anthony had strong first few innings with his control and off-speed pitches,” Coach Jim Becker said. Ubly plays Bad Axe at home on Thursday. Ubly is 3-4 on the season.

Softball

(At) Bad Axe 12, 3; Brown City 7, 8: Game 1: Winning pitcher Ashleigh Krug had seven strikeouts and one walk. Hits came from Maddy Jimkoski with two singles and Cynthia Labor, Lauren Prill, Hannah Young with one each. Game 2: Breyton Meeks had three singles; Maddy Jimkoski and Maddy Mellendorf had one each.
