BAD AXE — The Thumb Area STEAM Showcase returns from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 13, with hands-on fun, live animals, attractions and live music. The community festival is a free-admission, family-friendly event focused around Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics - STEAM!

The Bad Axe Public Schools is the site host, allowing the use of the Bad Axe Middle School, located at 750 S. Van Dyke Road (M-53) in Bad Axe.

Thanks to the generous donations from sponsors, there will be more than 20 attractions, including presentations and book signing by Johnathan Rand, author of the “Michigan Chillers” and “Freddie Fernortner - Fearless First Grader” series; a rocks and minerals sluice (free, while supplies last), a planetarium, live rainforest animals, inflatables and live music.

The DTE Energy Foundation and Thumb National Bank will give away kites and other prizes. The Bad Axe Area District Library will have free vouchers for solar viewing glasses so families can view the total solar eclipse this August.

The Thumb Area STEAM Showcase also includes the Student Showcase. Students from Huron County schools will showcase their work with Science Olympiad, the MDOT Bridge Building Challenge, robotics, drones and more. High school students will offer free face painting, make and take art activities and a petting zoo.

STEAM encompasses the important areas of math and science and expands it to all things Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics - which is an emphasis of what happens in schools everyday - namely the teaching and learning of all topics.

“The Thumb Area STEAM Showcase creates a way for schools, students and teachers to showcase the great things they are doing,” said Scott Whipple, a math and science consultant at the Huron Intermediate School District (HISD).

“There is a strong connection between science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the arts in the areas of design, communication and creative expression,” Whipple said.

Along with what’s going on in local area schools, environmental stewardship and alternative energy are also important topics.

Everybody is invited to attend as the event will cater to anyone interested in STEAM topics. Not only will the event showcase the excellent STEAM activities going on at local schools but opportunities in the greater Thumb region.

“It will be a highly interactive event and a great venue for families. It is a ‘not-to-miss’ experience for every young scientist, junior engineer, robotics enthusiast - and those who appreciate the natural and technical world,” Whipple said. “Learning is much more exciting when it is interactive, hands-on, and fun!”

Concessions will be available on-site. Additionally, the Bad Axe Elementary School & Middle School Destination Imagination Team will be conducting a can and bottle drive. The event hosts are the Huron Intermediate School District and the Huron County View.
