BAD AXE — A nationally renowned speaker returned to the community last week for a presentation that was sponsored by the local law enforcement agency in hopes being an ex-offender would better educate kids and adults about the growing drug epidemic.

On Wednesday, May 10, Michael DeLeon was welcomed by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office to make an informational presentation to the public at the Bad Axe Knights of Columbus Hall. The sheriff’s office also sponsored a meal before the presentation, and Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson said approximately 130 people attended.

DeLeon is the founder of Steered Straight, a non-profit formed in 2000 designed to carry an important message on the dangers of drugs, criminal activity and gang involvement.

His program brings first-hand experience about life-choices and consequences.

DeLeon was once intertwined in the life of drugs and traveled a rocky road until he realized it was not the path for him. He now leads a team of speakers who present a realistic and powerful prevention message. Many of the speakers affiliated with Steered Straight come from varied backgrounds and identify with today’s generation. These speakers have gone on to accomplish life goals and dreams by setting their sights higher and becoming productive contributing members of society. Most importantly, the program is dedicated to steering the youth to follow positive and productive paths.

DeLeon has also founded Stay in Your Lane Media in 2012 and has so far produced three documentaries, “Kids Are Dying,” “An American Epidemic” and “Marijuana X.”
