ISD elects two

HURON COUNTY - The biennial school board election of the Huron Intermediate School District was conducted on Monday, June 5. Janice Holz and Christopher Jahn were elected to the Huron Intermediate School District Board to fill two (2) six-year terms. Holz and Jahn were incumbent candidates and ran unopposed. The ISD school board election results are determined by a vote of Huron County’s 13 local school districts’ boards of education.

Pavlov announces ‘Be a Senator for a Day’ summer reading contest

LANSING - State Sen. Phil Pavlov (R-St. Clair Township) announces his 2017 “Be a Senator for a Day” summer reading contest, in coordination with local libraries. The contest runs Monday, June 19 - Saturday, Aug. 19, open to all first- through fifth-graders who have completed their local public library’s summer reading program. One winner from each branch will be selected as a “Junior Senator,” who will bring their parents to Lansing for a tour of the state Capitol, mock committee hearings and a pizza party with Sen. HBADL SRP registration open

HARBOR BEACH - Registration for the Harbor Beach Area District Library Summer Reading program for students from pre-school through 12th grade begins the week of June 12. Activities include: “Joel Tacey Magic & Comedy Show” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 20; and “Joel’s Extreme Duct Tape Workshop” at 6 p.m., June 20. Other activities include a craft day and a sand castle building contest at the beach. Register at the library.

Hatchet Tennis Camp, June 19-22

BAD AXE - Hatchet Tennis Camp, open to girls and boys going into first through ninth grades, will be from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., June 19-22. The camp introduces children, placed in groups based on age, to the game of tennis. Instructors emphasize proper technique. Details: Kent Tibbits, 989-295-5930.

Caseville thrift shop asks no more furniture

CASEVIILLE - The Helping Hands Thrift Shop in Caseville is no longer accepting furniture. Due to the overwhelming generosity of folks in the Caseville area, there is no space for these items. The Caseville thrift shop staff says, please donate your used furniture to stores that have the space so that those needing these items may purchase and use them; and, please, no furniture should be left outside the store; thank you.

Basement Sale, June 8-9

UBLY - There will be a Basement Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, June 8, and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, June 9 at Ubly United Methodist Church, corner of Main and Pike in Ubly. Proceeds will go for local mission work. Call 989-658-8817 for more information.

Cross Lutheran Family Garage Sale, June 8-10

PIGEON - Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon will be hosting their Cross Church Family Garage Sale June 8-10. The sale annually includes items such as: household items, toys, baby clothing, bikes, furniture, seasonal items, clothing, books, pictures, sporting goods, tools and more. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday. On Friday, all items will be half off. Saturday will be Free Day! Cross Lutheran Church is located at 200 Ruppert St. in Pigeon. The sale will be located in the school gym. Proceeds from this event will benefit Cross Lutheran Church and School missions. This is a Thrivent Financial-sponsored event.

Senior Project Fresh distribution dates set

HURON COUNTY - The Huron County Health Department announces Senior Project Fresh dates, times and locations. The program offers free fruit and vegetables to qualifying Senior Citizens. TEC meeting, June 10

GAGETOWN - The Thumb Electric Cooperative’s 80th Annual Meeting will be on Saturday, June 10 at the Thumb Octagon Barn, open to TEC members and immediate family. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., with chair seating under the big tent, which has room for 1,000 persons. The business meeting will begin at 10 a.m., including election of three directors, with collection of ballots at approximately 11:15 a.m. (Bring proxy before collection to be eligible to vote.) Lunch will be served at noon. Entertainment includes pony rides, a clown, face painting and bucket rides. The event also will feature an opportunity for registered members to win a door prize, with more than $1,000 in door prizes available.

Summer movie in Ubly, June 10

UBLY - Families are invited to the first Summer Movie in Ubly - “Firehouse Dog” - at dusk, Saturday, June 10 in the Village of Ubly Veterans Park. Sponsored by the Forever Soaring Sculpture Parkette, the event will include a Kid’s Coloring Contest, with prizes awarded in three categories. HB library showing free movies

HARBOR BEACH - The Harbor Beach Area District Library is hosting free family movies at the Harbor Beach Community Theatre as part of the summer reading program: 7 p.m., Monday, June 12 “The Lorax;” 7 p.m., Monday, June 26 “Fern Gully;” 7 pm., Monday, July 10 “Hoot;” 7 p.m., Monday, July 24 “Over the Hedge.” Details: 989-479-3417.

Prayer fellowship, June 14

ELKTON - The Elkton Prayer Fellowship will meet at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 14 at the Elkton Missionary Church, 220 N. Main St., Elkton. Judi Steffes, of Caseville, will be excitedly sharing the good things she has been learning in a recent study on a book titled: “Lord, Change My Attitude (Before It’s Too Late)” by James MacDonald. Judi loves the Lord and has a very caring, compassionate heart for others. Her warm, welcoming ways are a joy to experience. She recently celebrated 61 years of marriage to her husband, Richard. The fellowship includes praise and worship, and prayer and will conclude with a shared meal.

Lady golfers wanted for June 15 scramble

UBLY - Relay For Life says ladies golf scramble teams wanted for Thursday, June 15 scramble at Ubly Heights Golf Club. Check in begins at 8:45 a.m.; tee off at 9:30 a.m. Four ladies per team. “Join a fun group of ladies and help raise money to fight cancer!” All proceeds to the American Cancer Society. Register by June 16 for boater safety course

HURON COUNTY - The Huron County Sheriff’s Office will be offering a Boater Safety Course on June 19 and 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. The class will be held at the Huron County Sheriff’s Office’s basement. Students must attend both nights. There is no fee for this course, and students must pre-register by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 16 by calling the Huron County Sheriff’s Office Records Division at 989-269-6500 during regular business hours. Students will have to pick up the study materials prior to the start of the class from the Huron County Sheriff’s Office and they need to bring a pencil and paper. Students should be at least 12 years old or will be 12 years old during this boating season.
