BAD AXE - The City of Bad Axe Council appointed a cherished name within the community to fill an empty chair following a resignation.

Mayor Jim Hicks suggested the council appoint familiar face Eric Goebel after Marc C. Bridson resigned. Bridson, who served a term of three years, wrote a letter of resignation, which was approved with regret at the Monday, June 5 meeting. Bridson said he would be moving out of area and would, therefore, not be able to serve on the council.

“It has been a great privilege to serve the citizens of Bad Axe for the past three years. I would like to offer my support to the current administration and council. Best of luck for the remaining length of your term,” Bridson wrote in the letter.

Goebel, who was nominated and approved to fill the vacant position at the re-scheduled council meeting on Wednesday, July 5, brings previous experience with city government from working as a Huron County Friend of the Court.

Some of the community may recognize Goebel as husband to the late Kay Goebel, who served as Bad Axe city clerk for two decades and recently passed due to a battle with pancreatic cancer.

According to present City Clerk Rebecca Bachman, Goebel will be present at the next regularly scheduled council meeting, which is set to take place next Monday 7:30 p.m. at city hall.

In other business, the council approved purchasing 12 new telephones along with network consulting and installation costs for the amount of $6,546. The phone systems are to be installed in city hall and the Bad Axe police department.

Also, Vicky Sherry, of the Tuscola Economic Development Corporation, was appointed as the city’s new grant administrator in order to complete the final process of a grant application.
