Warren man sentenced for possessing a weapon

A 21-year-old man avoided a potential prison sentence Monday for convictions of in Huron County Circuit Court and was convicted of possession of a weapon habitual offender-second offense and larceny in a building-second offense.

Martin E. Klement was represented by attorney Julienne Ferris, who said the charges were a result of his mental health issues.

Prosecuting Attorney Timothy J. Rutkowski said Klement is no stranger to breaking and entering convictions, as he has a slew of previous charges. Rutkowski mentioned that because Klement is a second-offense habitual offender, the sentencing guidelines allowed Circuit Court Judge Gerald M. Prill to send the young offender to prison.

Ultimately Prill sentenced Klement to 240 days in jail, with 19 days credit, for the weapon conviction and for being a habitual offender. He also delivered a 180-day sentence for the larceny charge, allowing for 20 days credit for time served. The sentences are to be served concurrently.

Ubly man sentenced for breaking and entering

A 25-year-old Ubly was sentenced to jail Monday for breaking into a woman’s home with intent to commit larceny.

Jasson Glenn Sharrard was sentenced to 120 days in jail, with one day credit, after appearing in court with attorney Andrew Lockard. Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Dawn Schumacher read a victim’s impact statement, which said the woman had difficulty sleeping after knowing Sharrard had invaded her “safe place.”

Circuit Court Judge Gerald M. Prill also placed Sharrard on a 24-month probationary period in which he may not have contact with the victim. Additionally, he must engage in a wage assignment program and take a community corrections class. He must also pay $350 in restitution, $10 per month for probation oversight, $130 to the crime victims rights fund, $68 in state minimum costs and $60 in DNA collection costs.
