PIGEON & ELKTON - MDOT announces M-142 single-lane closure from Monday, July 10 to Friday, Aug. 18 from north of Weale Road to west of Elkton West village limits to accommodate hot mix asphalt cold milling, resurfacing and joint repairs.

Unionville library summer reading program events

UNIONVILLE - Columbia Township Library is now registering children, teens, and adults for its 2017 summer reading program. This summer’s program, “Build a Better World,” will encourage participants to make things with their hands, be a positive part of their community, and explore the world through reading. The program is sponsored by Consumers Energy. Activities include: Thursday, July 13 - 4 p.m.: Recycled Creations; Tuesday, July 18 - 11:30 a.m.: Preschool Story Time - “Construction;” Saturday, July 22 - 1 p.m.: Magical Comedy Show. M-20 resurfacing in Midland County

MIDLAND COUNTY - MDOT announces M-20 resurfacing in Midland County from Monday, July 10 to September, 2017, to resurface six miles of M-20 from Geneva Road to 9 Mile Road in Midland County to create a smoother ride and extend the life of the roadway. Traffic will be maintained with single-lane closures; a minimum of one lane will remain open in each direction through the project.

PORT HOPE - Grindstone Port Hope Sportsmen’s Club, 6101 Huron City Road, Port Hope, is offering a free Educational Outdoor Day for youth and mentors, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 29. Activities include gift giveaways, light lunch, drink and snacks provided while supplies last and kids must be accompanied by an adult. Bad Axe library summer reading program events

BAD AXE - The Bad Axe Area District Library announces summer reading program events: Our Amazing Universe Program, Thursday, July 13, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Tom Trusock will present “Our Amazing Universe!” Learn why solar and lunar eclipses occur, how to safely look at the sun and other fun facts about the solar system, this program will be at the Skate Park behind the Bad Axe Park, ages 8 and older are welcome; and during HatchetFest, on Saturday, July 15, the library will host a “Bookworm Obstacle Course” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bad Axe Park, all toddlers and kids are welcome.

Bad Axe Downtown Spruce-Up

BAD AXE - On Thursday, July 13, the Bad Axe Library will be sponsoring “Build a Better Bad Axe” with downtown improvement projects from 9 a.m. to noon. “Help beautify the parks and streets around downtown; tools will be provided.” Ages 8 and up are welcome. Call the library at 989-269-8538 to volunteer. “Do you need help with an outside project? You’re in luck!” As the library is coordinating a city cleanup in preparation for HatchetFest, hoping to build some community pride and relationships through the city’s beautification, anyone who has a project in the downtown Bad Axe area within walking distance of the library and could use a hand, may call the library at 989-269-8538 or email jkanaski@badaxelibrary.org for more information.

Huron County Historical Society meeting, July 13

POINTE AUX BARQUES - The Huron County Historical Society will hold its second quarterly meeting of year on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse located in Huron County’s Lighthouse Park hosted by the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Society. A social hour will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting at 7 p.m. Entertainment will be about the Great Lakes or the Life Saving Station. The meeting will be conducted out-of-doors, weather permitting, so bring a jacket or sweater. Directions: travel four miles north of Port Hope or nine miles east of Port Austin along M-25 to Lighthouse Road. Follow it about three-quarters of a mile to the Lighthouse Park entrance. All interested in Huron County’s history are welcome to attend.

Huron Line Road closed until July 14

COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP - Huron Line Road over the State Drain is closed between Gettel and Voltz roads in Sebewing Township and Ashmore and Remington roads in Columbia Township until Friday, July 14 due to bridge repair. The detour route, Voltz Road north to Bach Road west to Gettel Road south, is posted. Call the Huron County Road Commission at 989-269-6404 with any questions.

Scattered Souls of Pinnebog

LAKE TOWNSHIP - The Scattered Souls of Pinnebog Reunion committee invites all members and former members of St. Felix Parish and those with a connection to St. Felix to the Scattered Souls Reunion-Pinnebog at 10 a.m., Sunday, July 16 at Oak Beach County Park. Events include an 11 a.m. Mass at the park with Fr. Joseph Schabel, former St. Felix pastor - bring lawn chairs, with potluck to follow - bring a dish to pass and your own table service, chicken and ham will be provided, the youth - “The Felix Followers” - will sell pop and water. There will be a 50/50 raffle, games, prizes and a time to catch up with friends and a day of old-fashioned fun. Organizers ask everyone to pass the word and RSVP by July 1 to Carol Stewart 989-874-4760.

Raymond & Susan Bugg to perform, July 16

PIGEON - Top-of-the-Thumb Leisure Ministries presents a sing-along, led by Raymond and Susan Bugg to include a program of Patriotic, children’s, Gospel and campfire favorites. The program will begin at 7 p.m., Sunday, July 16 at Pigeon River Mennonite Church, 7120 Geiger Road, Pigeon. Raymond and Susan Bugg are a husband-and-wife duet from Harbor Beach. Raymond plays guitar and sings and Susan sings and provides an atmosphere of joy with an assortment of costume and props. Audiences will be encouraged to sing along and answer trivia questions. After the program, there will be a time of fellowship with refreshments provided by Hayes and Bay Port Methodist churches.

Cross Lutheran Church VBS

PIGEON - Grow Faith at … Cross Lutheran Church’s “Cross Camp” Vacation Bible School, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., July 17-20, is open to all children ages 3 up to 6th grade. No particular church affiliation is required for a child to attend. Children will study bible stories and verses that have references to the courage and wisdom of faith in Jesus. Children will enjoy snacks, make delightful crafts and make a joyful noise in song as we worship our beloved Jesus! It is encouraged that children are signed up as soon as possible so that enough supplies can be ordered. The closing program for VBS will be held Thursday, July 20 at 7 p.m. Those children participating in this VBS who would like to can ride on the float in the Pigeon SummerFest & Wing Fling Grand Parade on Saturday, July 22. Pigeon library friends asking for used books

PIGEON - The Friends of the Pigeon District Library are making preparations for their Annual Used Book Sale during Pigeon’s Summer Fest & Wing Fling. The Friends are asking for like-new or gently-used books. They say they are in need of fiction, non-fiction and kid’s books. Books will be accepted until Tuesday, July 18 at the library during its normal hours. The library is located at 7236 Nitz St. in Pigeon. Details: 989- 453-2341.

Parkinson’s support group to meet, July 18

BAD AXE - The Thumb Area Parkinson’s Support Group meets from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Holiday Inn Express, 55 Rapson Lane West, Bad Axe. The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 18. Details: 989-864-3779.

Red Cross blood drive, July 18
