BAD AXE – Engine problems caused a local resident to take mechanical measures into his own hands, ending with the truck dragging the 57-year-old man before rolling and coming to a stop on its roof.

Bad Axe Police Department responded Monday to the single-vehicle rollover accident on S. Stanley Street, near the intersection of W. South Street, finding truck owner Donald Carson suffering from non-life threatening injuries.

According to the police report, Carson was stranded on the side of the road after experiencing engine trouble with his 1993 Dodge Dakota. In an attempt to alleviate the problem, he lifted the hood of the truck and used a screwdriver to open the choke.

Carson then attempted to start the manual-transmission vehicle, causing the truck to jump into gear and proceed down the road with him in tow. He was dragged approximately five to 10 feet before escaping. The pickup continued to travel southbound on S. Stanley Street before striking a storage box located on the side of the road, causing it to go airborne, hit a tree and roll over.

Central Huron Ambulance transported

Carson to Huron Medical Center for treatment, while the vehicle sustained major damage and was deemed in-operable.

Detective/Sgt. Kevin Knoblock said the Carson believed the truck’s engine was flooded. He opened the choke in an attempt to let it breathe, since older vehicles often have carburetor problems when gas floods it.

“He is a lucky guy,” Knoblock said. “He is lucky that the runaway pickup did not strike a walking family or go crashing into someone’s porch.”

He continued to say Carson is fortunate to be alive because of the extensive damage to the truck. Knoblock also advised in that particular scenario, the proper thing to have done would have been to call a wrecker and leave the mechanical issues up to a motor vehicle repair facility.
