Caseville food pantry to close during ‘Cheeseburger’

CASEVILLE - The Caseville Community Food Pantry will be closed Friday, Aug. 18 due to the heavy traffic during ‘Cheeseburger’ - but will be open Friday Aug. 11 & Aug 25 from noon to 3 p.m.

‘Cheeseburger’ Pasty Sale

CASEVILLE - Cheese pasties will be made the morning of Saturday, Aug. 12 and be on sale from 9:30 a.m. until noon that day at the Helping Hands Thrift Store on Main Street in Caseville. Pasties may be pre-ordered by calling Carole Henry at 989-544-1562. Volunteers who will assist in making the pasties should be at the shop by 7 a.m. that morning.

Self defense class, Aug. 12

HARBOR BEACH - The Harbor Beach Area District Library will be hosting a free self-defense class beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12 in the gym. The class will last about three hours. Call 989-479-3417 to register.

Hearing & Vision Screening Clinic, Aug. 17

BAD AXE - The Huron County Health Dept. will be holding a Hearing & Vision Screening Clinic on Thursday, August 17, 2017 and Thursday, August 31, 2017 for children entering Kindergarten or Preschool in the Fall of 2017. Call 989-269-3330 for an appointment.

BAD AXE - The Thumb Sportsman Club 2017 Hunter Safety will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Aug. 24-25, and continue 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 26. To register, call 989-874-4919.

Register for Master Gardener class, Aug. 24

LAPEER COUNTY - MSU Extension-Lapeer County is offering a new course for those interested in becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer. The course runs for 15 weeks from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday evenings from Aug. 24 to Dec. 7 at Heritage Church, Imlay City Campus, 543 N. Cedar St. (M-21 & M-53). Lectures will cover Plant Science, Soil Science, Lawn Care, Annual and Perennial Flowers, Woody Ornamentals, Tree Fruit and Small Fruit, Vegetables, Household Pests, Indoor Plants, Water Quality, and Diagnosing Plant Problems. Community volunteering in horticulture-related activities is required upon training completion (40 volunteer public service hours within 12 months of completion). Cost for the class ($300) includes the 1,000-page training manual. Partial scholarship funds are available to eligible participants. Applications must be completed online by Aug. 16. Register for Autumnfest 5K

ELKTON - The Autumnfest 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by Northstar Bank, will begin with onsite registration at 7 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Ackerman Memorial Park Pavilion.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. from the end of Mullen Street by the ball diamonds in Ackerman Memorial Park. The awards ceremony will follow the race. All proceeds will benefit Lakers Girls Basketball and the Friends of Elkton. For more information, call Samantha Block at 989-269- 9237.

Register for Down Syndrome Awareness 5K, Sept. 9

PORT HOPE - The Fourth Annual Down Syndrome Awareness 5K Walk/Run will take place beginning 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9 from the Port Hope Fire Hall, 4250 N. Lakeshore Rd., Port Hope. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. that morning. To pre-register, call 989-428-3034 or 989-545- 2950. All proceeds will go to The 13th Annual Step UP for Down Syndrome Walk.

CA/N Council applications due

PIGEON - The Huron County Child Abuse/ Neglect (CA/N) Council is accepting support applications for the new fiscal year, with an application deadline of Sept. 9, 2017. Former programs funded include: Family Enrichment Program, Children’s Wellness Adventure, Period of Purple Crying, Talking About Touching, Darkness to Light, Safe Sleep Campaign, Huron County Baby Pantry and the Family Mentor Home Visiting Program. NH Class of ‘67 reunion

Singers sought for Reformation Service

SEBEWAING - Anyone who would like to sing in a combined choir for a Reformation Service at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing, 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 24, may please call Barbara Bleck at 989-325-0672 or email her at FrauAngelika@yahoo.com. The two pieces to be sung by the choir with brass, timpani, and organ accompaniment, are “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” and “To God Be the Glory.” Rehearsals will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 5, 12 & 19, with a mass rehearsal at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 24, all at the church. All are welcome to sing at this service, no matter their religious denomination.
