Book to Film Spotlight!

PIGEON - For the month of September, the Pigeon District Library will be doing a Book to Film Spotlight! Patrons who would like to participate may check out a book and when they are finished, bring it back and let the staff know how they liked it. If the library has the DVD movie version, they may check it out for free! Details: 989-453-2341.

Storybook Walk

PIGEON - The Storybook Walk has begun through downtown Pigeon. For September, the book is “If you Take a Mouse to School.” The walk will begin outside the Pigeon District Library doors on Main Street and head north, crossing to the west and then south back to the library. Details: 989-453-2341.

CA/N Council applications due Sept. 9

PIGEON - The Huron County Child Abuse/ Neglect (CA/N) Council is accepting support applications for the new fiscal year, with an application deadline of Sept. 9, 2017. Former programs funded include: Family Enrichment Program, Children’s Wellness Adventure, Period of Purple Crying, Talking About Touching, Darkness to Light, Safe Sleep Campaign, Huron County Baby Pantry and the Family Mentor Home Visiting Program. Register for Down Syndrome Awareness 5K, Sept. 9

PORT HOPE - The Fourth Annual Down Syndrome Awareness 5K Walk/Run will take place beginning 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9 from the Port Hope Fire Hall, 4250 N. Lakeshore Rd., Port Hope. Summer Send-Off, Sept. 9

BAD AXE - Join the Huron County Recovery Roundtable for a free event - Summer Send-Off - a relaxing afternoon from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9 at Wilcox Park, 650 Whitelam St., Bad Axe. Everyone is welcome to this alcohol free community celebration. Live music will be provided by “Staff Infection.” A sub lunch will be sponsored by the Huron County Recovery Roundtable. First Baptist Sunday School Kick-Off, Sept. 10

BAD AXE - The First Baptist Church, 120 N. Outer Dr., Bad Axe will host its Sunday School Kick-Off at 10 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 10, with fun and fellowship for every age, including games for teens and younger. Trinity Lutheran celebrating 125 years, Sept. 10

ELKTON - Trinity Lutheran Church, 130 High St., Elkton celebrates its 125th Anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 10, with a festival service at 4 p.m. The guest speaker will be Rev. John Seifert, a pastor in Midland and president of the Michigan District of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.

Laker looking for Hallway of Heroes participants, Sept. 11

LAKER - Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker Elementary School is looking for local police, firefighters, military service men and women, EMTs, emergency room workers, 9-1-1 dispatchers, doctors and nurses to participate in its Hallway of Heroes event, which will begin at 9 a.m., Monday, Sept. 11. During this event, the school invites heroes to visit classrooms and talk about their duties in these service positions. Each hero will speak to at least one classroom. Then heroes walk down the hallways as students and staff line the sides and applaud. The event is conducted to say “thank you” to dedicated local heroes. The entire event will be about 30-45 minutes. Local heroes can be from anywhere in Huron County. To participate in this event, call 989-453-4631.

Thumb Area MEA Retired meeting, Sept. 12

CASS CITY - Thumb Area MEA Retired will meet Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the Charmont Restaurant, Cass City. There will be a social hour at noon, where members may purchase their lunch. At 1 p.m., Cheryl Matas, regional director of Voters Not Politicians, will discuss a possible constitutional ballot amendment regarding gerrymandering. Nature Center Fall Dinner, Sept. 16

BAD AXE - The Huron County Nature Center Fall Dinner 2017 will take place beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Huron Area Technical Center (HATC), 1160 S. Van Dyke Road (M-53), Bad Axe. Prayer fellowship

ELKTON - The Elkton Prayer Fellowship will meet at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the Elkton Missionary Church, 220 N. Main St., Elkton. Wendy Bowlin will share from Dr. John MacDougall’s book “Being Sober & Becoming Happy” which describes MacDougall’s life story, how he was horribly abused as a child, became an alcoholic and a drug abuser and yet was transformed. Today, Dr. MacDougall is the Director of Spiritual Guidance at Hazelden Treatment Center in Minnesota. Bowlin worships at the Rivers Edge, is the current praise & worship leader for the Prayer Fellowship, is retired from the Huron County Health Department, sings in nursing homes and other venues, volunteers at the local homeless shelter, assists her children and grandchildren and does whatever else the Lord puts in her path.

Chicken BBQ Dinner, Sept. 17

PIGEON - On Sunday, Sept. 17 Cross Lutheran Church, 200 Ruppert St., Pigeon, will hold a Chicken BBQ from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Steve Schulze, of Pigeon, will be on hand to BBQ the chickens. The menu consists of BBQ chicken, red skin potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, rolls, beverage and homemade dessert. Tickets will be sold at the door. Carryout will be available. This is a Thrivent Financial-sponsored event. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Cross Lutheran Church’s Capital Improvement Fund.

Singers sought for Reformation Service, Sept. 24

SEBEWAING - Anyone who would like to sing in a combined choir for a Reformation Service at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing, 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 24, may please call Barbara Bleck at 989-325-0672 or email her at FrauAngelika@yahoo.com. The two pieces to be sung by the choir with brass, timpani, and organ accompaniment, are “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” and “To God Be the Glory.” Rehearsals will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 5, 12 & 19, with a mass rehearsal at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 24, all at the church. All are welcome to sing at this service - no matter their religious denomination.

4-H looking for materials to benefit clubs, drop off

HURON COUNTY - The new 4-H year has started and clubs are asking parents, residents and businesses to donate craft materials for various projects. Bring materials to the 4-H Building at the fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 30. Items include cloth material, buttons, scrap wood, beads, mason jars, Christmas items, ornaments, old frames, Easter items, Halloween items, holiday items, Christmas lights, yarn, string, nails, scrapbooking paper and materials, wire, craft paints, glass materials for etching and cotton balls. Mustard Seed 5K, Sept. 30

RUTH - “The Mustard Seeds” will be holding their 3rd Annual 5K Walk-a-thon/Run Saturday, Sept. 30. The Mustard Seeds’ Mission Statement: “The Mustard Seeds are honored to serve you!

We are proud members of our faith-based communities and wish to spread hope, compassion and friendship.” The timed event will begin at 8 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul of Holy Apostles Parish Parking Lot, Ruth. Registration includes a free T-shirt. First, second and third place medals will be awarded to men, women and youth. Fall Foliage & Family Fun Day

PORT AUSTIN - The Huron County Nature Center will host a new event - its Fall Foliage & Family Fun Day, Saturday, Oct. 14. The Nature Center says of this fall color tour: “Why drive north for those fall leaves when the most stunning colors can be found right here in the Thumb?! Holly Berry Fair set for Nov. 4

CASEVILLE - The Caseville Library Club announces their 49th Annual Holly Berry Fair, with food concessions served all day and all proceeds donated to charities, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 4 at the school. There is no admission charge. Details: 989-856-4062.
