SIGEL TOWNSHIP - A DTE Energy wind turbine located in the company’s Sigel wind park in Sigel Township experienced a broken blade on Saturday.

The malfunction occurred on Oct. 7 at approximately 6:30 p.m. at the wind park located on Minden Road. According to Cynthia Hecht, Senior Communications Specialist of DTE, an automated safety system shut down the turbine immediately.

Hecht further told the VIEW there were no injuries or property damage and continued to mention the maintenance personnel were on site immediately to secure the equipment. She added the crew is investigating the cause of the incident.

“Modern wind turbine technology is very safe and blade failures are rare,” Hecht said. “As Michigan’s largest producer of renewable energy, DTE has been operating wind turbines since 2009 without any injuries while providing customers with energy that is safe, reliable, affordable and clean.”
