PORT AUSTIN - A weekend of fundraisers are planned for Port Austin in memory of Shari Babcock Etzel who recently passed away. All proceeds from the Oct. 13-15 activities will go toward the construction of a splash pad in Port Austin.

During the weekend of Oct. 13-15, the Port Austin Chamber of Commerce has organized a weekend of fun events to honor Shari Babcock Etzel for all the contributions she made to Huron County and beyond, according to Port Austin Chamber of Commerce Board Member Jill Babcock Meeks.

Shari Etzel, a Port Austin native, was a speech therapist who worked tirelessly for the children in the school districts she represented, said Meeks.

This special weekend kicks-off formal fundraising for a splash pad for Port Austin.

Besides the desire to bring more people to Port Austin, there are significant benefits associated with a splash pad including the ability to support a healthy lifestyle and enhance “family well-being,” to provide safe and sustainable play environments and to substantially lower recreation costs over an extended period of time, Meeks said.

“We hope this will become an annual fun fall weekend event in Port Austin and continue to honor Shari’s memory,” Meeks added.

Registration will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Port Austin Welcome Center downtown and continue from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 14.

The first activity on Saturday will be the Halloween Costume Swap & Parade at 11 a.m. at the Port Austin Farmers Market. Participants can bring costumes to swap or sell.

The “1.28748”-K Race will begin at 1 p.m. at Port Austin Kayak, with the 2:30 p.m. Award Ceremony at the Bird Creek Farms Tap Room.

The Corn Hole Tourney will begin right after the awards ceremony at Bird Creek, with a $40 per two-person team entry fee. There will be live music and food concessions.

The last activities will be the Golf Scramble and the Silent Auction beginning at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 15 at Bird Creek Golf Course.
