The Lakers must defeat Bad Axe this Friday to win the division outright.

Lakers also punched their ticket into the postseason with this win in head coach Steve VerBerg’s first season at the helm.

“I really want to thank my staff, they’ve done an outstanding job with the young men all season long, this wouldn’t be possible without their effort ,” said VerBerg. “The boys earned it, they got after it and we put a good one out there tonight.”

The Lakers kicked off the scoring with a run by Jacob Kretzschmer in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run, putting the Lakers up 8-0.

USA couldn’t move the ball on their next possession and was forced to punt the ball back to the Lakers.

Kretzschmer followed his blocking and scored another 1-yard touchdown run with 1:45 left in the half and the Lakers took the lead 14-0 into the locker room.

Lakers wasted little time on their first possession of the second half and they let Kretzschmer handle the rock again, this time Kretzschmer shot out of the backfield like a cannon and scored from 15 yards out, making the score 22-0 and taking just under three minutes to score.

It took the Lakers just 2 minutes and 56 seconds to score another time, and it was Kretzschmer once again who found the end zone on the 31-yard touchdown run.

“He did a great job for us running the ball and he’s one heck of an athlete,” said VerBerg after Kretzschmer’s performance.

Taylor Kady found the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run, putting the Lakers up 36-0 early in the fourth quarter.

USA responded with a touchdown pass from Micah Cramer to Brendan Prime, making the score 36-6 with just over five minutes left in the game.

Lakers wasn’t done scoring yet as Corey Manenti finished off the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run, sealing the game for the Lakers with the score 42-6.

Jacob Kretzschemer led the way for the Lakers with 126 yards on the ground and 4 touchdown runs, along with 25 yards receiving. Corey Manenti added 93 yards rushing and Preston Warren tallied up 83 yards. Taylor Kady contributed 22 yards and Troy Chappel added another 18 to the Lakers total of 453 rushing yards.

USA was led in rushing by Hunter Bohn with 25 and Alan Rabun added 18. Cramer finished with 7 yards on the ground and 58 through the air, including that 34-yard touchdown pass to Prime.

The Lakers face the Bad Axe Hatchets, who are coming off a win against the Reese Rockets, on Friday, Oct. 13 in Bad Axe.

USA will play host to the Vassar Vulcans on Friday as well.
