Tables for Tips returns February 12

Courtesy photo Courtesy photo BAD AXE - Many students from all parts of the world will be waiting “Tables for Tips” at Pizza Hut in Bad Axe on Monday, Feb. 12 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The students are here through the International Student Exchange program and are attending local schools and have become a member of a new family and new community. While the students are here, they must participate in community service hours to give back to the communities for supporting their stay and for welcoming them into their new community. The money that the Students earn will go to the Human Development Commission (HDC) for their Walk for Warmth Program, a statewide event sponsored by Community Action Agencies for the purpose of raising funds for individuals and families in desperate need of assistance with heat and utility emergencies. Many of the people HDC serves are struggling on fixed incomes or are ineligible for other types of assistance. Walk for Warmth is a voluntary effort on the part of area citizens who gather pledges and walk a predetermined one-mile route in February. Funds raised assist those in need. In the past, HDC’s Walk for Warmth efforts has assisted seniors, handicapped and the working poor. Many of the students have never experienced the cold or snow and cannot imagine what it must be like to be really cold in their own home. Organizers say, “If you can, please come and support them at Pizza Hut and join them in helping to make someone’s home a little warmer this winter.” Students are here from many different places: Angel from Taiwan, Maria from Brazil, Tamara from Serbia, Kike and Pablo from Spain, Noah from Denmark, Nathan from Thailand and Vanessa, and Dani and Amie from Vietnam. They say that they are looking forward to meeting folks from the Thumb and making a difference in the community.
