BAD AXE - Elaine Laming, of Ubly, was sworn in as the new Huron County Register of Deeds by Judge David Herrington at a ceremony on Friday, March 1 in the probate courtroom. Approximately 35 co-workers, family members and friends attended the event.

Judge Herrington said it was a privilege to preside at the “happy and important occasion.” He said this is a “significant achievement” for Laming and that she will “perform a critical function” for Huron County.

After the ceremony, Laming said, “it’s an honor to represent Huron County.”

The vacancy opened upon the retirement of Register of Deeds Sheri Stanton on Feb. 28. A committee comprised of Huron County Clerk Lori-Neal Wonsowicz, Huron County Prosecutor Timothy Rutkowski and Huron County Probate Court Senior Judge David Clabuesch advertised the position, conducted interviews and selected Laming.

Laming has been employed at Case Surveying for 20 years, most recently serving as office manager. She will serve until the election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
