Cottrellville man dies in ATV accident

HUME TOWNSHIP – A 54-yearold Cottrellville man died when the ATV he was riding hit a driveway abutment.

Huron County sheriff’s deputies responded to the single-rider accident Saturday, March 2 at 5:17 p.m. on Sand Road, about a half mile east of Oak Beach Road.

The preliminary investigation showed that Curtis D. Thrift, 54, Cottrellville, was riding with a friend who was on another ATV, when Thrift accelerated his 2013 Polaris, said Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson.

The friend then came across Thrift, who had apparently struck a driveway abutment on a curve and was thrown from the ATV.

A neighbor heard the accident and rushed to the scene, where he and the friend began life saving efforts.

Thrift, who was not wearing a helmet was pronounced dead at the scene.

Accident reconstruction deputies processed the scene. The Huron County Medical Examiner’s Office ordered an autopsy. The investigation is continuing.

The Port Austin Fire Department and Central Huron Ambulance Service units from the North Division and Bad Axe assisted at the scene.
