Courtesy Photo UBLY — High School cross country coaches Garrett Jurgess, of Ubly, and Nick Rochefort, of Bad Axe, are leading by example for their student athletes, by training for and qualifying for this year’ s Boston Marathon. In all, 626 runners, including Olympians Dathan Ritzenhein and Desiree Linden from Michigan will be among the 30,000 participants qualified for the 122nd running of the marathon on Monday, April 16. In order to qualify for the marathon, the coaches had to have a marathon time of under 3 hours:5 minutes, Jurgess’ qualifying time was a 2:54.53 that he ran at a marathon in Toledo Ohio.

This will be the first Boston Marathon for Jurgess and the fourth for Rochefort. Both coaches are coming off good cross-country seasons and have been training for the marathon together. In describing their relationship, Jurgess puts it this way, “We both coach-crosscountry at the schools we graduated from - Ubly for myself and Bad Axe for him - and came off very successful seasons this past fall. We also compete against each other in many local races. Since we are both close to the same age and pace, that often puts us in the same age group against each other as well.”

If you would like to track their progress during the race, you can do so by going to the Boston Marathon website, or by downloading the B.A.A. Marathon app. You can also receive eight text alert updates by texting RUNNER to 234567. You will need the athlete bib number for alerts. Jurgess’ bib number is 2430 and Rochefort’s is 2476.
