Hugh Clark on Saturday, May 19, with the public invited. There is no charge for admission. The activities will begin at 2 p.m., followed by a scouting ceremony then a potluck.

Speaking on behalf of the Harbor Beach Conservation Club, John Kriewall said that Clark was a longtime teacher, scout leader and avid outdoorsman. He also said Clark was a woodcarver who sold his work and donated proceeds to charity.

“He had a zest for life,” Kriewall said about Clark. “He was a conservationist. Everything was a learning experience.”

From about the late 1960s to the late 1980s, Clark was a cub scout and boy scout leader. He also enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, camping and wood lore, Kriewall noted. Clark and his wife would kayak and canoe in Canada similar to a “voyageur,” he added. Clark passed away in June, 2017.

Clark taught science, biology and chemistry at Harbor Beach High School, Kriewall noted. Clark also wrote “Talk for the Table” for the Harbor Beach TIMES, Kriewall also said.

“He was a big inspiration for all of us,” Kriewall said of Clark.

Kriewall explained that the conservation club took over the responsibility of the cabin after many of the scouts had graduated about six or seven years ago. He said that cub scouts would use a cabin actively during the day but that boy scouts conduct all-night stays. The civic-minded group has since done fixup work on the cabin including shingles, painting and windows, getting it ready for expanded use, he added.

Kriewall said from what he has been able to find out about the history, an original cabin was there in the late 1940s or early 1950s but it burnt in the late 1970s or early 1980s and that Clark and other scouting parents re-built a cabin.
