Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

I hope that the Huron County Commissioners have the wisdom to say “No” to joining the lawsuit against opioid manufacturers. County corporate counsel advises that the reason not to join the lawsuit is that any recovery might well be less than the County’s expenses. A better reason is not to join the lawsuit is to stand up for personal accountability. Even if the manufacturers encouraged the use of opioids, medical practitioners still had to prescribe them and some failed to prescribe properly. To try to hold the manufacturers accountable is the same as trying to hold automobile manufacturers accountable for collisions caused by bad driving.

We do not need either the expense or the irresponsibility of our government officials playing the litigation lottery. They should have higher standards.

Kenneth Bush
