Richard Gundlach, age 82, of Bad Axe, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2018 at his home after a long battle with heart disease.

Richard was born in Richmond, Michigan on April 6, 1936, son of the late Elmer and Clara (Makowski) Gundlach. He married Theresa Burns on July 13, 1957 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Richmond.

Richard was a 1955 graduate of Richmond High School. He started his farming career and a trucking business soon after. In 1962, in search of more farm land, he relocated his family to the Bad Axe area and along with his wife, Theresa and his brother, Theodore established Gundlach Bros Farms. After over 50 years of hard work and honest sweat, Richard retired and alongside Theresa they spent many years traveling the United States.

He will be missed by many and remembered very fondly for his story telling, the love he showed so generously to his family, and how he beamed with pride when he spoke of his family and the life he lived.

Richard is survived by his wife, Theresa Gundlach of Bad Axe; his children, Deborah Gundlach of Sebewaing, Marsha (Ken) Ludlow of Martinez, Georgia, Brenda (John) Dean of Bad Axe, Lisa Gundlach of Bad Axe, Sheila (Kevin) Truemner of Owendale, Rich (Kelly) Gundlach of St. Clair Township; two brothers, Earl Gundlach of Croswell and Theodore Gundlach of Bad Axe; grandchildren, Mickaela Lusignan, Amanda (Cory) Gunn, Brandon Dean, Kendra (Kyle) Mitchell, Erica (Garret) Mausolf, Michael (Amanda) Pionk, Kyle Truemner, Abigail Truemner, Evan Gundlach, Ella Gundlach, Kenny Ludlow, Brandon (Catherine) Ludlow, Nicole (Dylan) Brown, and Shawn Ludlow; and many great-grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by two brothers, Martin Gundlach and Lawrence Gundlach; two sisters, Frances Hugo and Lorraine Richardson; sisters-in-law, Marcella Gundlach and Pilar Gundlach; brother-in-law, Lloyd Hugo; and one grandson, Brody Truemner.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Hubert Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Officiated by Fr. Rob Howe. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be offered to St. Hubert Parish Food Pantry and family discretionary fund.

Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe handled the arrangements.
