Baseball: USA, Ubly win district titles

Photos by Mike Wilson PIGEON - The Unionville- Sebewaing Area Patriots’ baseball team captured their fourth-consecutive district title when they defeated the North Huron Warriors 10-0 in the championship game.

“I’m thrilled” was USA Head Coach Tyler Bader’s response when asked about his team’s district title.

“Honestly, when you’ve had a tough and it ends like this, with a fourth straight district title, I am happy - and I am happy for our seniors,” Bader added.

USA got off to a fast start by scoring 3 runs in the top of the first inning and, from that point on, starting pitcher Devin Riskey shut down North Huron’s bats and allowed the Patriot team to go on to an easy, 10-0 four-inning win to claim the district title.

In the USA-Laker semifinal game, with the score tied 1-1 in the fourth inning, the Lakers loaded the bases with no outs, but Brenden Prime helped the Patriots with two force outs at home plate, which held the Lakers to just one run. USA went on to score six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and won the game 7-2.

On the other side of the semifinal bracket pairings, North Huron defeated the Caseville Eagles 17-2 and earned the Warriors the right to play USA in the championship game.

USA will play Ubly in the first round of the regionals at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, June 9 in Kingston.

THE ROAD FOR THE UBLY BEARCATS

KINGSTON - The Road to a Championship went through the town of Kingston for the Ubly Bearcats. The Orange & Black team worked their way through their district tournament earned the right to move on to the regionals. The championship game featured Ubly taking on the Eagles of Deckerville.

The bracket pairings, en route to the championship game, featured Ubly defeating Harbor Beach in the first round by a score of 9-6, and then easily beating the Carsonville-Port Sanilac Tigers in the semifinals 16-1.

On the other side of the bracket pairings, the Deckervile Eagles had a tough opening round game against the Peck Pirates that lasted nine innings with the Eagles finally winning the game 4-3. Deckerville then defeated the Kingston Cardinals 10-0 in 5 innings.

Ubly was able to defeat the Deckerville Eagles 4-0 in the championship game to claim their district crown.

In the district-level finale, Ubly’s Ryan Sweeney was on the mound for the Bearcats and gave a championship-worthy performance, pitching 6 innings giving up no runs and 4 hits while striking out 10 Deckerville batters. Anthony Sweeney led the offense with 2 hits including a triple that plated 2 runs for the Bearcats.

Ubly will move on and play USA in the first round of the regionals at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 at Kingston High School. The winner will then move on to the regional championship game and play the winner of the Dryden versus Saginaw Nouvel semifinal game.

The championship game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
