Ubly’s Alex Grifka wins state track crown in 1600m, sets school record

HUDSONVILLE - Alex Grifka ran a personal best time of 4:27.90 to capture the state crown in the 1600m race at the Division 4 State Track Championships. Grifka, an Ubly High School senior, set a school record in the 1600m race and then set another school record when he finished seventh in the 3200m race with a time of 10:12.43.

But Grifka was not the only one of 16 local area student athletes who recorded Top 10 finishes in the state meet.

Freshman Grace Williamson, of USA, recorded a second place finish in the high jump with a leap of 5-02.00 and then took second place when she ran a personal best time of 25.58 in the 200m race.

The Ubly Bearcats’ 4x800m relay team of Shelby Messing, Josie Gusa, Janelle White and Haili Gusa took second place with a time of 9:58.84. The team also took fourth place in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:17.44.

For the Men - David Lanfear, of Harbor Beach, took sixth place in the high jump; Michael Anderson, of Harbor Beach, finished in eighth place in the 3200m race; Andrew Gilbert, of Ubly, took ninth place in the shot put; and Andrew Pechette represented North Huron well with a tenth place finish in the pole vault.

For the Women - Haili Gusa ran a 2:24.73 in the 800m and finished in fourth place representing Ubly; and Laker pole vaulter Karly Cunningham took fifth place with a jump of 9-03.00.
