Football Week 3 pre-VIEW

There are several good match-ups under the Friday night lights this week in both of the Greater Thumb conferences and the North Central Thumb Leagues.

Here is a quick look at those matchups.

In a game where both of the teams’ offenses have scored 50 points or more this season, the Bad Axe Hatchets will take on the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers. Both teams bring a 1-0 league record into the game, however, the Lakers have beaten two teams that are in the playoffs nearly every year. In Game One, the Lakers defeated Hudson 36-6 and then easily defeated Reese 54-15. The Hatchets lost their season opener to Harbor Beach 34-20, but bounced back to defeat Vassar 50-14 in Week Two. While Bad Axe has clearly improved over last year, the Lakers seem to have picked right up from their 10-2 season a year ago and look to be a team poised for a playoff run.

• Prediction: EPBP Laker 45 - Bad Axe Hatchets 14

Unionville-Sebewaing Area Patriots will be at home for the third week in a row as they look to give their hometown fans their first victory of the season as they welcome the Caro Tigers. Having suffered back-to-back losses, first to Ubly in the season opener 20-12, and then last week to Cass City 42-20, the Patriots will seek to get that first win over the Tigers who are an even 1-1 on the young season. Caro lost their season opener to Birch Run 20-0, then they bounced back to defeat GTC East doormat Capac, 57-14. In what looks to be a competitive game, the Patriots should be able to use the home field advantage and record their first win of the season.

• Prediction: USA 17 - Caro 12

In the VIEW’s featured game of the week, the Ubly Bearcats travel to Sandusky to face the Redskins. Both teams are undefeated so far this season. Sandusky defeated class “B” Imlay City, 44-0 in Week One and then took care of Brown City 38-16 to start their season. The Bearcats struggled a bit in Week One but held on to defeat USA 20-12, when the defense stopped the Patriots on 4th down from Ubly’s 15-yard line. In Week Two, Ubly handily defeated a weak Memphis squad 44-0. This will be a classic matchup between the Bearcats’ staunch defense and Sandusky’s powerful offense. In a game where the winner will be positioned to win a league title, the nod will go to the defense.

• Prediction: Ubly 16 - Sandusky 15

The other East match up this week will see Harbor Beach hoping to bounce back from its overtime loss to Marlette last week as the Pirates host Capac. This game should be a no-brainer - with the Pirates winning this one by a large margin.

• Prediction: Harbor Beach 48 - Capac 6

North Huron will travel to Bay City All Saints and hope to get back into the winning side of things. The Warriors played a very good game in a tough loss to Sacred Heart in their first game of the season, after accepting a forfeit from Carsonville-Port Sanilac in Week One. Bay City brings an 0-2 record into the game after losses to BLUE Division teams Kingston 72-37 and Peck 36-26. Look for North Huron to bounce back in this one.

• Prediction: North Huron 28 - BCAS 12

Caseville comes off a big win over Wolverine 62-6 after dropping season opener to Genesee 54-12 to take on Burton Madison Academy. Burton Madison has yet to play a game as they forfeited to Owendale-Gagetown in Week One and then accepted a forfeit from C-PS last week.

• Prediction: Caseville 36 - BMA 0

Owendale-Gagetown will travel to Peck for this week’s game. O-G lost to Genesee 40-0 this past week and their win was a forfeit over Burton Madison. Peck lost their opener to New Haven Merritt 16-0 but bounced back to defeat Bay City All Saints 36-26. This game could come down to the fourth quarter.

• Prediction: O-G 32 - Peck 28
