GREGORY A. “CAPPY” MAURER, 72, of Ubly, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 14, 2023, surrounded by family.
He was born April 2, 1950, in Bad Axe to the late Elmer and Marcyann (Mausolf) Maurer. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1968 and then enlisted in the Army. He received an honorable discharge in 1971. He married Deborah (Kish) Urban on July 30, 2005. Greg worked in various factories throughout his life, including Marlette Homes, Active (now Tower) and General Cable and retired from Gemini Plastics in 2012. He was a member of the Thumb Veterans Organization. He had a lifetime love of working with wood, whether it be helping someone with home improvements, creating projects for loved ones or displaying projects in his own home or yard. He also loved playing horseshoes and baseball and played softball for the church for many years. He took great pride in owning his yellow 1971 Dodge Superbee Charger and enjoyed giving people rides in it. He was a devoted family man and loved spending time with them in large groups or just one on one.
Greg is survived by his wife, Deborah (Kish) Maurer; four daughters, Kelly (Dean) Trainor of Whittemore, Marcylynn (Brandon) Stiff of Metamora, Patricia (Bob Gucwa) Maurer of Bad Axe, Paula (Seth) Newman of Fort Worth, Texas; two step-daughters, Tara Charboneau (Josh) and Arielle Urban (Nick); 15 grandchildren, Tasha, Emma, Ethan, Connor, Caelyn, Xander, Grant, Kyle, Jaclynne, Jasmine, Arianna, Zayne, Lehnya, Leiani, and Nicholas; one great-grandson, Joey; four brothers, Noel (Judy) Maurer, Marty (Connie) Maurer, Ray Maurer, Jeff (Adrienne) Maurer; one sister, Sheila Morin; several nieces and nephews and six grand fur-babies. Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Marcyann Maurer; sister, Rita Maurer; grandsons, Adam and Ben Maurer-Paicz, Jacob Gucwa; brother-in-law, Denny Morin, sister-in-law, Paulette Maurer; and mother-in-law, Shirley Kish.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Parish-St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Sheridan Corners. Officiated by Fr. Nate Harburg. Burial was in the church cemetery. Visitation was held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 from 1-8 p.m. at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe or Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the service time at 11 a.m. A scripture service was offered on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
