Jim was born
April 13, 1928 in
Pinnebog, to the late
Clarence and Muriel (Thompson) Champagne. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1946. He married Bessie Lou Thompson on February 16, 1952 at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog; she preceded him in death April 1, 2014.
In his early career he farmed and worked for Michigan Sugar. He then worked in construction, eventually owning his own excavating service. He drove truck for Huron Excavating retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Elkton Lions and Caseville Eagles, where he enjoyed playing any kind of cards.
He is survived by children, Deb (Dan) Watterworth of Lapeer, Floyd (Tracey) of Grand Rapids, Sheila (Jim Chappel) Polega of Pinnebog, Mike (special friend Judy Fleming) of Fort Worth, Texas and Mary (Chuck) Schuette of Owendale; grandchildren, Jason, Jina, Niccole, Nicholas, Natalie, Ron, Brandon, Alicia, and Austin and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert of Elkton and sister, Anna Jean McBride of Elkton. He was preceded in death by siblings, Beatrice Kraynak, and A. William Champagne.
A Funeral Mass was held at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville with Fr. Robert Pare presiding. Burial was in St. Felix Cemetery in Pinnebog.
