Free mask giveaway for seniors

BAD AXE – The Region VII Area Agency on Aging will be holding a free mask giveaway for adults ages 60 and older.

The giveaway will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at the Huron County Senior Center located at 150 Nugent Road.

There will be a total of five cloth masks per package.

A proxy can be appointed to pick up masks for those seniors who are not able to. The proxy will need to provide the name, address and birthdate of each person of whom they are picking up masks for.


Elkton Prayer Fellowship for August

ELKTON – Elkton Prayer Fellowship will meet at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 12, at the Elkton Missionary Church, 220 N. Main St. in the village.

Kris and Sarah Kappler will be in attendance to share highlights of their ministry. The Kapplers served as missionaries with One Mission Society (OMS) from 1998 to 2015 in South Korea, Kazakhstan, and regionally in Africa.

They have had the wonderful privilege of working among pastors, orphans, college students, and church planners while raising three children who are all now adults. They returned to the United States in 2015 to pastoral ministry in a local church, and currently reside in East Tawas.

All adults are welcome to attend the fellowship and childcare will be available.


Caseville pop-up food pantry August 15

CASEVILLE – The Caseville Food Pantry will be giving out food on August 15 to those who need or want food using a pop-up food truck.

Please line up on Vine Street at the Caseville School. Cars can begin lining up around 9 a.m. and volunteers will start loading food into trunks no later than 10 a.m.

Have your trunk open with boxes or bins in the trunk to make loading your food much easier.


Port Austin History Center closed for season

PORT AUSTIN – In consideration of the safety of its volunteers, officials have decided to close the Port Austin History Center for the remainder of the 2020 season.

Despite the closure, work to enhance the history center continues, including finishing the patio in front of Ed’s Barbershop and replacing the roof and windows on the 1853 Schoolhouse.

Although the buildings are closed, people are still invited to visit the grounds.


Pickleball Pro to conduct clinics in Bad Axe

BAD AXE – On Wednesday, Aug. 19, Womens Pickleball Pro Catherine Parenteau from the Lansing area will offer a three-hour workshop in Bad Axe.

The workshop will run in two sections: For beginners up to ranking of 2/5, workshop hours will go from 9 a.m. until noon, while players ranked 3 and up will go from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Check out Parenteau’s Facebook page to learn more about her credentials as an instructor and pickleball player, plus her endorsements, including Paddletek. She and assistant Athena Trouillot, ranked in the top 20, will provide paddles for demonstration and/or purchase.

Clinic topics include pickleball essentials such as strategic serving, the third shot drop, and dinking.

Cost for the workshop is $75, payable in cash or check the day of. In case of inclement weather, the clinic will be held at an alternate indoor location.

The Bad Axe City Tennis Courts are dually used and have four painted pickleball courts, so space is limited to 16 participants per clinic. The courts are directly beside the Bad Axe District Library.

MSU Extension offering Preserving Your Harvest online classes

HURON COUNTY – As gardens are growing, thoughts turn to the ripening overflow of shiny, red tomatoes, bright green peppers and other delicious home-grown goodies, along with farmers markets filled with fresh produce. Why not save some of this bounty to enjoy all through the year?

Food preservation is a science, and we must properly preserve food or dangerous bacteria can cause foodborne illness.

Join the MSU Extension Office to learn safe home preserving techniques and valuable resources to ensure the safety of your home preserved food. Preserving your Harvest classes will be held every Thursday from August through October from 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. online.

No matter what your home food preservation experience is whether beginner or seasoned, these free classes will allow you to learn the most current recommendations for safe home preserving and to ask any questions you may have. Join for all sessions or choose the topics that interest you.
