Man arrested after shooting at motorists

One vehicle struck by bullet



GORE TOWNSHIP – – A 43-year-old Northville man was arrested after he was reported to have been shooting at passing vehicles on North Lakeshore Road (M-25) and Lawitzke Road.

According to the Michigan State Police Caro Post, troopers were dispatched to the area around 9:44 p.m. Aug. 6, after two separate 911 calls reporting a man shooting at vehicles.

The two victims reported a vehicle was disabled in the roadway and each stopped to check on the car at different times.

The first victim reported as they slowed down to check on the parked car, a man jumped out of the ditch and began firing a gun. The suspect then pointed his gun at them and was demanding a ride.

The second victim observed the vehicle in the road and slowed to go around it. At this time, a man ran out of the ditch and pointed a handgun at them.

Each victim was able to drive away and call 911. No one was injured but one victim’s vehicle was struck by a bullet.

Also responding to the scene were the Harbor Beach Police Department, Port Austin Police Department, Huron County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team (ES Team), MSP K-9’s, and MSP Aviation and East Huron Ambulance.

The suspect, Jonathon C. Burns, could be seen near the disabled vehicle, still armed, and a perimeter in the area was established.

Around 3:15 a.m., ES Team members approached the vehicle, but Burns had already fled into the woods. Around 4:15 a.m., he was found by a K-9 unit on a two-track trail, northeast of the vehicle and taken into custody.

He sustained minor injuries from the K-9 and was treated at a local hospital and arrested on numerous felony charges.

Tuesday, Burns was arraigned on charges of assault with intent to murder, four counts felony firearm, two counts assault with a dangerous weapon and attempted carjacking.
