Port Hope man dies in rollover accident

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — Investigators continue to seek the cause of a single-car accident that claimed the life of a Port Hope man Friday evening.

Despite CPR attempts, Andrew T. Schulte, 48, died at the accident scene from injuries sustained after being ejected from his truck, Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson said.

Preliminary investigation indicated Schulte was westbound on Filion Road, west of Minden Road, when his 1997 GMC pickup hit an embankment and overturned several times.

Witnesses who saw the vehicle prior to the accident told investigators it appeared Schulte was having difficulty controlling it, Hanson said.

He said deputies received information suggesting intoxicants may have been a factor in the crash, but there will not be conclusive evidence until the toxicology report comes back, which can sometimes take weeks.

An autopsy was performed Saturday. Accident investigators from the Huron County Sheriff’s Office processed the scene, and the investigation will continue.

According to a press release, deputies responded to the accident at 5:10 p.m., and rescue attempts were already under way when they arrived. Other agencies responding to the scene were the Port Hope Fire Department and the Eastern Huron Ambulance Service.
