Program helps adults who struggle to read

HURON COUNTY – Knowing how to read is crucial to survival. The need to read surrounds us everywhere, from reading menus at restaurants, bills that come in the mail, washing information on clothing, not to mention all the books, magazines and newspapers that we are exposed to.

Community Connections recognizes that the inability to read can greatly affect a child’s and n adult’s ability to be self-sufficient and successful. With the help of grants from the Huron County Community Foundation and Huron County Child Abuse/Neglect Council, Community Connections is trying to make reading help more available to adults.

With the help of Karen Currie and others at the Huron Intermediate School District, staff members at Community Connections, the Harbor Beach Area District Library, and the Bad Axe Area District Library are ready to help adults with literacy. Currie facilitated trainings to help these staff members learn skills, some best practices and writing techniques to help struggling readers.

If someone you know is struggling with literacy, have them get in touch with someone at the location which best fits their needs.

Community Connections is offering drop in assistance every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Harbor Beach and Bad Axe libraries are also available to assist with literacy by appointment.
