BAD AXE – The Scheurer Health network has officially opened its doors in the Bad Axe area.

Located on Buschlen Road adjacent to Walgreens and Ashley Home Store in the city, the company opened its primary care facility to the public for the first time May 20.

“It was truly impressive to see everything in the building that we’ve planned for well over four years now, come to fruition,” said Clark Ramsey, marketing and communications director for the hospital.

Ramsey said in the world of COVID- 19, it was a bit of a subdued start, but a start nonetheless. A grand opening will be planned at a later time.

“We’d love to have the public come in and check out why we’re so excited,” Ramsey said.

The concept for the site is an integrative health model based around the customer experience.

The 14,000 square foot building houses a full-time primary care provider and part-time pediatric care provider, as well as plenty of flexible space for multiple other health care options and education. It boasts 10 exam rooms, a procedure room, behavioral health wing, care coordinators and diabetes education office space, a 40-person conference room, full lab, and diagnostic imaging space.

“When we came to the drawing board at the very beginning of this project we said ‘How would our customers want to be treated?’ – and then we built the whole basis of the building around that,” Ramsey said. “It wasn’t ‘Here’s how the patients will interact with the building,’ it was ‘Here’s how our building will interreact with our patients.’”

Dr. Long Nguyen and nurse practitioner Jennifer Jones will provide primary care Monday through Friday at the facility, while Dr. Kerrie Rabanera and nurse practitioner Lois Booms will see pediatric patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“Primary care is the driver of all health care for people,” Ramsey said. “You have a great relationship with your primary care provider, that opens the doors to a lot of things to maintain better health.”

The concept of adding another community to the Scheurer footprint began four years ago. After a few years of planning, the company broke ground last June and despite the coronavirus situation, nearly hit its goal of opening this spring.

“We were truly impressed to see a project go on schedule, on budget, all those things,” Ramsey said. “Just a great team effort from everyone involved. It was a long time in the works, but we’re so pleased with the outcome.”

Another project in the works for the hospital is finishing construction at its walk-in clinic in the Bad Axe Meijer called Scheurer Health Fast Care. Ramsey said that is on schedule to open when the store opens later this year.
